          Abstract

Since the nineteenth century, when people have discussed the connections between literature and society, they have usually used a visual image that has become so common as to seem automatic. Without thinking through the static imagery and without thinking about what is involved in converting words to images, they think as literate people usually do—in visual terms. They say that literature “reflects” society.
