Economic Development and Privacy Regulations in Malaysia

Abstract

Prioritising personal data privacy has become essential for cultivating a robust and sustainable digital economy. The volume of personal data generated and processed has increased dramatically as Malaysia moves closer to becoming a digital economy, driven by growing connectivity and quickening technological advancements. The Malaysian government has proposed significant amendments to the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA) in response to the evolving global data protection standards and digital privacy landscape. This chapter aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of these proposed amendments and their implications for individual rights, data controller and processor responsibilities, and data governance. Apart from assessing the significant adaptations, the chapter offers a synopsis of worldwide advancements in data protection as well as an examination of the underlying legislative objectives.
