About the Journal

Socialist Lawyer is the print and online publication of the Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers. Founded in 1930, the Haldane Society provides a forum for the discussion and analysis of law and the legal system, both nationally and internationally, from a socialist perspective. It holds frequent public meetings and conducts educational programmes. The Haldane Society is independent of any political party. Membership comprises lawyers, academics, students and legal workers as well as trade union and labour movement affiliates.

Aims & Scope

The Haldane Society’s constitution guides our magazine’s aims and scope:

• To uphold the principles of justice and liberty in the United Kingdom and elsewhere;
• To promote reforms in the law and the legal system in the interests of the working class movement and of democratic and socialist advance within the United Kingdom;
• To give advice and assistance to labour movements and other progressive organisations on matters concerning the law;
• To provide a forum for discussion on and the analysis of law and the legal system from a socialist perspective.

Journal Information

The Journal is published three times a year, in February, June and October. The Journal is edited and written by volunteers, many of whom work full-time in the legal sector, so these publication dates may vary. The electronic journal is archived in Portico. The Journal’s website can be accessed here.

Editorial

The current editor of Socialist Lawyer is Joe Latimer, who took this post at the AGM of January 2020. Important editorial decisions are shared with the rest of the Executive Committee of the Haldane Society.

Instructions for Authors

Contributions should speak to the aims and concerns of the Haldane Society (see above) and can take the following form:

• Short reports of 400 – 900 words
• Longer features of up to 2000 words
• Reviews of legal scholarship as well as cultural media (e.g. a recent edition contained a review of ‘I May Destroy You’)
