JMIR: Research Protocols

JMIR Research Protocols is a core component of our Open Science mission - publishing metholodologies in advance of results provides clarity on the capabilities of a study, reduces bias towards positive results, and creates an early citable record of the research. The journal publishes methodologies and grant proposals across all areas of health research and is indexed in PubMed and Scopus - unique for a protocols journal.

About the Journal:

JMIR Research Protocols is a core component of our Open Science mission, publishing Open Access methodologies and grant proposals across all areas of health research. A scientific discourse that encourages the publication of the study design prior to results produces better work in a number of ways:

  • Provides clarity on the scope and capabilities of a study to measure its intended subject
  • Reduces bias towards positive results (all papers with an accepted protocol will be accepted in the JMIR family of journals, even with negative results)
  • Invites earlier and more diverse feedback to improve the study design
  • Creates an early citable recrod of the project with no rush to be first to publish results and 'plant your flag'

Institutions and journals - incuding our own - increasingly require publication of a methodology ahead of results to be considered for acceptance/publication or funding. This is a vital step towards transparency in scientific research which we hope to encourage by offering a 20% discount on any APC for a JMIR journal that has the methodology published in JMIR Reseach Protocols.
