Abstract. This article discusses how participatory processes can be made possible in institutions for children in their first years of life. In this context, development-specific and special features are discussed in more detail. It turns out that in the institutional education and care of infants and (very) young children, the responsibility for how much participation opportunities are granted to the children lies with the pedagogical specialists. They shape everyday pedagogical life and thus determine the degree of participation, i.e. whether and how infants and toddlers can take part in the day-care routine in a self-determined way. Therefore, the facilitation of participative moments is discussed as part of a pedagogical-professional basic attitude, which must also be reflected and anchored in the team. Building on the theoretical part, the results of two group discussions will be presented, which were evaluated using the documentary method. The attitudes of pedagogical experts were reconstructed to enable participation processes. As a result, three ideal-typical types of action were worked out: Type A “Orientation-seeking – Steering”, type B “traditional-structuring” and type C “open-participative”. Based on the results, the first indications of professionalization efforts to create participatory practice in crèches is discussed.
