Abstract

Resumen El final de la Guerra Fría significó una doble y sorprendente transformación conceptual para la comprensión de la innovación democrática. La participación y la representación perdieron sus posiciones estables y opuestas en la teoría democrática y asumieron nuevos roles analíticos. Examinamos esos cambios y argumentamos que la oposición entre ambos conceptos se relacionó con circunstancias históricas que ya no existen. El nuevo contexto ha permitido la disociación analítica entre la representación y el gobierno representativo y forzado precisiones del concepto de participación y su papel para entender experiencias de innovación democrática.

Abstract Since the end of Cold War there has been a surprising two-fold conceptual shift with deep consequences on our understanding of democratic innovation. Participation and representation lost their stable opposed positions within democratic theory, performing new analytical roles. We argue that the opposition of both concepts was closely related to historical circumstances that are not any longer in place. New circumstances have allowed the analitic dissociation between representation and representative government, and new and more precise definitions of participation to understand democratic innovation experiences.
