          Abstract

          Objective

          to define the competencies for the prevention and control of healthcare-related infections that should be developed by the generalist nurse and the specialist nurse in infection control in Brazil.

          Method

          the Delphi technique, developed in four rounds, was used. Thirty-one nurses and eight physicians participated in the study, with expertise in infection prevention and control. Data were collected using open-ended questionnaires, whose answers were treated using the content analysis technique. Structured instruments were used to evaluate the importance of each competency using a Likert scale. Data were analyzed and presented in a descriptive way, use of median and coefficient of variation.

          Results

          the competences were organized in 4 core, 14 generic and 17 specific, with name and description of each competency.

          Conclusion

          the definition of competencies for the prevention and control of healthcare-related infections is the first step to begin the rethinking of the teaching and learning process in the initial training of nurses. The data found in the present study may help to restructure education and support permanent education programs in health.

          Objetivo

          definir as competências para a prevenção e o controle de infecções relacionadas à assistência à saúde que devem ser desenvolvidas pelo enfermeiro generalista e pelo enfermeiro especialista em controle de infecções no Brasil.

          Método

          empregou-se a técnica Delphi, desenvolvida em quatro rodadas. Participaram do estudo 31 enfermeiros e oito médicos com expertise em prevenção e controle de infecções. Para a coleta de dados, utilizaram-se instrumentos com perguntas abertas cujas respostas foram tratadas por meio da técnica de análise de conteúdo e instrumentos estruturados para avaliar a importância de cada competência por meio de escala Likert, sendo os dados analisados e apresentados de forma descritiva, uso de mediana e de coeficiente de variação.

          Resultados

          as competências foram organizadas em 04 centrais, 14 genéricas e 17 específicas, com nome e a descrição de cada competência.

          Conclusão

          a definição das competências para a prevenção e o controle de Infecções Relacionadas à Assistência à Saúde é o primeiro passo para se iniciar o repensar acerca do processo de ensino e aprendizagem na formação inicial dos enfermeiros. Os dados encontrados auxiliam na reestruturação do ensino, além de fundamentar programas de educação permanente em saúde.

          Método DELPHI: caracterização e potencialidades na pesquisa em Educação

          Resumo Este artigo apresenta e discute o método Delphi e suas aplicações em Educação. Trata-se de um método com grande potencial como ferramenta metodológica, amplamente usado em pesquisas de várias áreas do conhecimento, mas ainda pouco utilizado no Brasil. Parece, então, pertinente ampliar a discussão sobre suas potencialidades, de modo a subsidiar a sua utilização tanto nas pesquisas em Educação como no planejamento e na gestão educacional. Assim, por meio de uma revisão narrativa da literatura da área, pretende-se dar a conhecer suas características e pressupostos, bem como descrever seu processo de implementação e análise. Serão ainda discutidas as principais vantagens e desvantagens do método, descritas as aplicações mais comuns e apontadas as suas potencialidades nas pesquisas em Educação.

            Competency in infection prevention: a conceptual approach to guide current and future practice.

            Professional competency has traditionally been divided into 2 essential components: knowledge and skill. More recent definitions have recommended additional components such as communication, values, reasoning, and teamwork. A standard, widely accepted, comprehensive definition remains an elusive goal. For infection preventionists (IPs), the requisite elements of competence are most often embedded in the IP position description, which may or may not reference national standards or guidelines. For this reason, there is widespread variation among these elements and the criteria they include. As the demand for IP expertise continues to rapidly expand, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc, made a strategic commitment to develop a conceptual model of IP competency that could be applicable in all practice settings. The model was designed to be used in combination with organizational training and evaluation tools already in place. Ideally, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc, model will complement similar competency efforts undertaken in non-US countries and/or international organizations. This conceptual model not only describes successful IP practice as it is today but is also meant to be forward thinking by emphasizing those areas that will be especially critical in the next 3 to 5 years. The paper also references a skill assessment resource developed by Community and Hospital Infection Control Association (CHICA)-Canada and a competency model developed by the Infection Prevention Society (IPS), which offer additional support of infection prevention as a global patient safety mission.               Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practice of Infection Control among Dental Students at Sana’a University, Yemen

              Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding infection control procedures among senior dental students. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional survey was conducted among 145 4th- and 5th-year dental students at the Faculty of Dentistry, Sana’a University, Yemen. The self-administered questionnaire was comprised of 20 open- and close-ended items regarding barrier techniques, vaccination status, infection control practices, and awareness. Data were analyzed with a Chi-square test. A P ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The response rate was 72% (145 out of 204 potential respondents). Overall, 71.7% of the students had been vaccinated for hepatitis B and only 9.5% were tested for post-hepatitis B virus immunization serology. While the vast majority (96.6%) reported always wearing gloves for all dental procedures, the use of face masks and eyewear were reported by only 53.8% and 14.0% of students, respectively, with no significant difference between genders and year of study (P > 0.05). A significantly higher percentage of 5th-year students (58.9%) showed positive attitudes toward the treatment of patients with infectious diseases, as compared to only 31.0% of 4th year students (P < 0.01). A great number of students (62%) reported non-sterile occupational percutaneous and mucous injuries while treating their patients. Conclusions: These unsatisfactory findings highlight the necessity of continued infection control education in order to improve knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding infection control among dental students at Sana’a University.
