          Abstract

Abstract This article explores the relationships between conceptual metaphors and syntax, based on the analysis of 415 metaphorical expressions present in 353 statements taken from two reference works published by experts in the field of cognitive linguistics. For this, the syntactic categories and functions were identified from the dependency grammar and the argument structure model, using natural language processing tools. Subsequently, descriptive, and inferential statistics were applied to determine the frequencies and associations between the identified categories, the verbal valence variables, the argument structure of the verb and the grammatical person. The results obtained illustrate the importance of the verb within the configuration of the grammatical structures of metaphorical expressions. In this sense, the approach based on verbal valence and that of argument structure can be taken as a basis in the elaboration of a theoretical-practical model for the automated detection of conceptual metaphors.

Les résultats obtenus illustrent l'importance du verbe dans la configuration des structures grammaticales des expressions métaphoriques. En ce sens, l'approche fondée sur la valence verbale et celle de la structure argumentative peuvent être prises comme base dans l'élaboration d'un modèle théorique-pratique pour la détection automatisée des métaphores conceptuelles.

Chi-Square Test is Statistically Significant: Now What?

Applied researchers have employed chi-square tests for more than one hundred years. This paper addresses the question of how one should follow a statistically significant chi-square test result in order to determine the source of that result. Four approaches were evaluated: calculating residuals, comparing cells, ransacking, and partitioning. Data from two recent journal articles were used to illustrate these approaches. A call is made for greater consideration of foundational techniques such as the chi-square tests. Accessed 74,155 times on https://pareonline.net from April 06, 2015 to December 31, 2019.
