          Abstract

F (= Codex Florentinus, Codex Pisanus, ms.

          Translated abstract

F (= Codex Florentinus, Codex Pisanus, ms. Laurentianus sine número) has two essential caractheristics, it is the ancientest manuscript of the Digesta and in addition it is the most complete one. However, this manuscript is a codex imperfectum, in other words, it includes mistakes. Some of them even come from the Justinian compilers, when complying with the Emperor's order, a lot of passages were removed or distorted. Some others come from their own copyists (librarii), some others from their proofreaders (emendators) and some others came up when later adding interpolations and glosses. The mistakes made during its transmission gave rise to the hiatus (gaps). In order to correct these mistakes, when possible, Mommsen used the greek versions in his edition maior and completely disregarding the Vulgata.
