          Abstract

          Translated abstract

Evidence-based practice is an approach that enables the improvement of health care quality. The use of research findings on founded practice is one of the pillars of such approach; however, there are various barriers that hinder this nursing process, such as the lack of nurses' skills, lack of time and organizational support (human, material and financial resources). Therefore, based on the literature, this article presents some strategies that allow for the implementation of evidence-based practice in nursing in whatever area the nurse may perform.

Barriers and facilitators of research utilization. An integrative review.

For over 20 years, nursing literature has discussed the gap between the conduct of research and the use of its findings to improve practice. Factors relating to the nurse, the setting, the research, and the way research is presented have been identified as barriers to research utilization. A combined approach that includes specialty organizations that take the lead in knowledge synthesis and dissemination, the creation of national on-line databases, and enhanced institutional supports and educational efforts is recommended.

Utilization of nursing research: culture, interest and support.

This paper acknowledges that the successful utilization of nursing research in practice is a highly complex task. Basic requisites include a positive research culture associated with the essential interest and support needed to promote change. Within this framework factors concerned with the research culture within nursing and the NHS are considered, as well as the research-practice gap, the role of researchers, educational issues and the need for both local and national support. Comparisons are made with the more positive research culture in the USA, and some American research utilization models are mentioned. It is suggested that research is not highly regarded in the UK and that the required level of interest and support depend on nursing research becoming an expected, valued and rewarded activity. Some general suggestions for actions which should promote research utilization are made.

Bridging the research-practice gap: exploring the research cultures of practitioners and managers.

To ensure effective utilization of research in nursing more evidence is needed which illuminates the way nurses think about research, the value which they put on it, and how they envisage that it may help or hinder them in their everyday work. This English study aimed to meet these objectives by describing the research culture of practising nurses, health visitors and midwives, and their managers. It rests on two assumptions. Firstly that the reasons why practitioners do, or do not, base their practice on research are complex, and secondly, that interventions to increase research utilization must be grounded in an appreciation of this complex 'whole'. Thus the study took a qualitative approach to exploring: what participants thought and felt about research; the current status of research based practice; and the opportunities and constraints to increasing research based practice. The results confirm the hypothesis that many factors, both individual and organizational affect research utilization. Furthermore, practitioners and managers hold differing perceptions regarding the nature of research, its role, and the opportunities and constraints which effect its dissemination and utilization. The implications of the results for education, policy and practice are discussed.
