          Abstract

Abstract Objective: To evaluate menopause symptomatology, lifestyle habits and sociodemographic conditions of women between 45 and 60 years old in the province of Almeria (Spain), and to analyse which variables are related with the manifestation of climacteric symptoms. Methods: Data was obtained by carrying out surveys with 130 participating women. The severity of menopausal symptoms was evaluated with the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) questionnaire. Results: On average, postmenopausal women were older, had higher Body Mass Index values, and higher frequency of not having a partner, compared with premenopausal women. Postmenopausal women had higher total symptoms, associated with higher somatic-vegetative and urogenital symptoms. Adherence to Mediterranean diet and physical exercise reduced somatic-vegetative and psychological symptoms, respectively. Conclusions: Maintaining specific healthy lifestyle habits such as Mediterranean diet and physical exercise can reduce menopause symptoms and increase the quality of life of menopausal women.

Executive summary: Stages of Reproductive Aging Workshop (STRAW).

A select group of investigators attended a structured workshop, the Stages of Reproductive Aging Workshop (STRAW), at Park City, Utah, USA, in July 2001, which addressed the need in women for a staging system as well as the confusing nomenclature for the reproductive years.

Endothelial function is impaired across the stages of the menopause transition in healthy women.

The stages of the menopause transition are characterized by changes in ovarian hormones and increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and vasomotor symptoms that may adversely affect vascular health. We tested the hypothesis that endothelial function, a predictor of CVD, would be reduced across the stages of the menopause transition, independent of CVD risk factors and vasomotor symptoms. This was a cross-sectional study of 132 healthy women from the general community aged 22-70 yr, categorized as premenopausal (n = 33, 32 ± 6 yr; mean ± SD), early perimenopausal (n = 20, 49 ± 3 yr) or late perimenopausal (n = 22, 50 ± 4 yr), or early (n = 30, 55 ± 3 yr) or late postmenopausal (n = 27, 61 ± 4 yr). Endothelial-dependent vasodilation was measured by brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) using ultrasound. Brachial artery FMD was significantly different among the groups (P < 0.001). It was highest in premenopausal women (9.9 ± 2.1%) with progressive decrements in perimenopausal (early: 8.2 ± 2.5%; late: 6.5 ± 1.9%) and postmenopausal women (early: 5.5 ± 1.9%; late: 4.7 ± 1.7%). Adjustment for risk factors, vasomotor symptoms, and sex hormones did not alter the association (P < 0.001). In subgroup analyses of women aged 50-59 yr, brachial artery FMD was lower in late peri- and early and late postmenopausal compared with early perimenopausal women (P < 0.001) but was not different between late perimenopausal and either early or late postmenopausal women. Our findings suggest that a decline in endothelial function begins during the early stages of menopause (perimenopause) and worsens with the loss of ovarian function and prolonged estrogen deficiency. These data add to the accumulating evidence that the perimenopausal window is a critical time period for adverse changes in CVD risk.

International versions of the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS)

Background Symptom scales for aging women have clinically been used for years and the interest in measuring health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has increased in recent years. The Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) is a formally validated scale according to the requirements for quality of life instruments. The aim of this paper is to review the current state of the instrument particularly concerning versions of the scale in different languages. MRS versions available The translations were performed following international methodological recommendations for the linguistic & cultural adaptation of HRQoL instruments. The first translation was done from the German original scale into English (UK & USA). The English version was used as the source language for the translations into French, Spanish, Swedish, Mexican/Argentine, Brazilian, Turkish, and Indonesian languages (attached as additional PDF files). Conclusion The MRS scale is obviously a valuable tool for assessing health related quality of life of women in the menopausal transition and is used worldwide. The currently available 9 language versions have been translated following international standards for the linguistic and cultural translation of quality of life scales. Assistance is offered to help interested parties in the translation process.
