Abstract

Resumen Este artículo tiene el objetivo de visibilizar, desde una perspectiva antropológica, el trabajo de intermediación cultural de los guías de turistas. Para ello, se analiza el caso de México, que país que ocupa el séptimo lugar mundial en el número de llegadas de turistas y que posee un enorme patrimonio cultural y natural. Los servicios que prestan los guías son de gran importancia para la operatividad del turismo y la valoración del patrimonio. Su trabajo se ha llegado a equiparar con la de un “embajador cultural”, al ser muchas veces el primer contacto que tiene el visitante al llegar a una ciudad, a una zona arqueológica, a un centro histórico o a un área natural protegida. Este artículo explora las características y naturaleza simbólica del trabajo de los y las guías de turistas y presenta un análisis de su quehacer y condiciones laborales.

Abstract The main goal of this article is to recognize the importance, from an anthropological point of view, of the cultural mediation work of the tour guide. We use the case of Mexico, the seventh most visited country in the world, with its multiple natural and cultural heritage sites. The services provided by the tour guides are of great importance for tourism. Their role has been equated to that of a cultural ambassador, as they often are the first and main contact that the visitor has in a city, archaeological site, historic center or natural protected area. This article explores the characteristics and symbolic nature of the work done by the tour guides and presents an analysis of their role and working conditions.
