In tool steels with a high concentration of carbon, mainly trapped in carbides, typically there are only 0.6 mass-% of carbon dissolved in the matrix during austenitisation. Despite of 18 mass-% of chromium in newly developed high strength austenitic stainless CrMnCN steels there is about 1 mass-% of carbon + nitrogen in solid solution without precipitates. New objectives for the heat treatment come up due to the combination of (C+N) instead of C or N and the high quantity of interstitial atoms in solid solution. The solution annealing temperature, the influence of the atmosphere in the furnace and the quenching behaviour are under examination. With the growing content of (C+N) the solution annealing temperature rises. It is found that the surface zone is influenced differently by solution annealing in air, 1 bar of gaseous nitrogen or vacuum. Caused by the location of the precipitation range of the new steels the t 10/7 cooling time is more significant than the t 8/5 cooling time. The analysis of the quenching behaviour reveals the necessity of short t 10/7 cooling times.
