          Abstract

At present, there is an increase in the capacity of data generated and stored in the medical area. Thus, for the efficient handling of these extensive data, the compression methods need to be re-explored by considering the algorithm’s complexity. To reduce the redundancy of the contents of the image, thus increasing the ability to store or transfer information in optimal form, an image processing approach needs to be considered. So, in this study, two compression techniques, namely lossless compression and lossy compression, were applied for image compression, which preserves the image quality. Moreover, some enhancing techniques to increase the quality of a compressed image were employed. These methods were investigated, and several comparison results are demonstrated. Finally, the performance metrics were extracted and analyzed based on state-of-the-art methods. PSNR, MSE, and SSIM are three performance metrics that were used for the sample medical images. Detailed analysis of the measurement metrics demonstrates better efficiency than the other image processing techniques. This study helps to better understand these strategies and assists researchers in selecting a more appropriate technique for a given use case.

Computer-aided diagnosis of skin cancer based on soft computing techniques

Abstract Skin cancer is a type of disease in which malignant cells are formed in skin tissues. However, skin cancer is a dangerous disease, and an early detection of this disease helps the therapists to cure this disease. In the present research, an automatic computer-aided method is presented for the early diagnosis of skin cancer. After image noise reduction based on median filter in the first stage, a new image segmentation based on the convolutional neural network optimized by satin bowerbird optimization (SBO) has been adopted and its efficiency has been indicated by the confusion matrix. Then, feature extraction is performed to extract the useful information from the segmented image. An optimized feature selection based on the SBO algorithm is also applied to prune excessive information. Finally, a support vector machine classifier is used to categorize the processed image into the following two groups: cancerous and healthy cases. Simulations have been performed of the American Cancer Society database, and the results have been compared with ten different methods from the literature to investigate the performance of the system in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, negative predictive value, specificity, and positive predictive value.

Brain tumor segmentation based on deep learning and an attention mechanism using MRI multi-modalities brain images

Brain tumor localization and segmentation from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are hard and important tasks for several applications in the field of medical analysis. As each brain imaging modality gives unique and key details related to each part of the tumor, many recent approaches used four modalities T1, T1c, T2, and FLAIR. Although many of them obtained a promising segmentation result on the BRATS 2018 dataset, they suffer from a complex structure that needs more time to train and test. So, in this paper, to obtain a flexible and effective brain tumor segmentation system, first, we propose a preprocessing approach to work only on a small part of the image rather than the whole part of the image. This method leads to a decrease in computing time and overcomes the overfitting problems in a Cascade Deep Learning model. In the second step, as we are dealing with a smaller part of brain images in each slice, a simple and efficient Cascade Convolutional Neural Network (C-ConvNet/C-CNN) is proposed. This C-CNN model mines both local and global features in two different routes. Also, to improve the brain tumor segmentation accuracy compared with the state-of-the-art models, a novel Distance-Wise Attention (DWA) mechanism is introduced. The DWA mechanism considers the effect of the center location of the tumor and the brain inside the model. Comprehensive experiments are conducted on the BRATS 2018 dataset and show that the proposed model obtains competitive results: the proposed method achieves a mean whole tumor, enhancing tumor, and tumor core dice scores of 0.9203, 0.9113 and 0.8726 respectively. Other quantitative and qualitative assessments are presented and discussed.
