Abstract

Diego Portales se ha transformado en una verdadera leyenda en la historia política chilena. Figura controversial que ha motivado interpretaciones muy disímiles. El objetivo del presente artículo es analizar el punto de partida de este mito político. Para ello estudiaremos los últimos momentos de la participación política del ministro en 1837, desde la perspectiva del El Príncipe de Maquiavelo. La idea es explicar, utilizando la. teoría política moderna del filósofo florentino, las circunstancias que rodean la muerte de Portales. El funeral también será parte de este estudio, planteando que responden a la necesidad de inventar una tradición de carácter republicano en el marco de los nacientes estados hispanoamericanos.

Diego Portales has become a true legend of Chilean political history, a controversial figure who has prompted very different kinds of interpretation. The aim of this article is to analyze the origin of his political myth. We will study the final phase of the minister’s political activities in 1837 from the perspective of Machiavelli’s The Prince. By means of the Florentine philosopher’s modern political theory, we may explain the circumstances which surrounded the death of Portales. A look at Portales’s funeral reveals that it responded to a need to create a republican tradition at the time of the birth of the Hispano-American nations.
