Developed out of the Bioconductor project, this paper is the seminal work on research compendia by Gentleman and Temple Lang. Statistician and bioinformatician Robert Gentleman was a chief originator  of the Bioconductor project as well as the R programming language.

It is in this work that the authors define "a software framework for both authoring and distributing ... integrated, dynamic documents that contain text, code, data, and any auilaiary content needed to recreate the computations" and thus verify and adapt the claims in any research report.

This paper introduces the concept of a "compendium as a container for one or more dynamic documents and the different elements needed when processing them, such as code and data. The compendium sewrves as a means for distributing, managing, and updating the collection."

The Paper of the Future/Research Compendium Collection here on ScienceOpen strongly references the compendium model described by Gentleman and Temple Lang in this paper in selecting additional works on the subject or demonstrating its capabilities. For that reason, we owe much to the concept's originators and their first paper.
