          Abstract

          Understanding the contribution of photosynthesis to the animal metabolism is a fundamental issue for the understanding and classification of this intriguing plant-animal association. Furthermore, the capacity to keep functional chloroplasts up to several months inside animal cells in the absence of an algal nucleus is unique to Sacoglossa sea slugs. The perspective of unravelling the mechanisms that allow metazoan cells to host photosynthetically active chloroplasts is certainly appealing for biotechnological applications such as artificial photosynthesis, e.g. used in wound healing, opening challenging new research fields.
