          Abstract

          El camarón blanco Litopenaeus schmitti ha sido explotado en el Caribe colombiano desde 1968, convirtiéndose en una especie de gran interés comercial y llevando al desarrollo de una alta actividad pesquera, que posteriormente llevó a una sobreexplotación que condujo a un decrecimiento en la captura. Debido a esta situación de la especie, con el fin de estudiar la diversidad genética y el grado de diferenciación genética dentro de cada población y entre las distintas poblaciones del camarón blanco Litopenaeus schmitti en el Caribe colombiano con ayuda de marcadores moleculares microsatélites, se capturaron 162 individuos de cuatro localidades costeras: Laguna de Navío Quebrado en La Guajira, Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta en Magdalena, bahía de Barbacoas en Bolívar y bahía de Cispatá en Sucre; y una población de mar abierto en el golfo de Morrosquillo, frente a las costas de Córdoba y Sucre. Se encontró que la población de Navío Quebrado presentó la mayor heterocigosidad observada, mientras que la de Ciénaga Grande presentó el menor índice de endogamia. De acuerdo con el análisis de estructura poblacional existen tres unidades; una conformada por las poblaciones de Ciénaga Grande, bahía de Barbacoas y Cispatá, otra por el golfo de Morrosquillo y otra por la laguna de Navío Quebrado, lo cual puede estar influido por los patrones de corrientes oceanográficas.

          Translated abstract

          Southern white shrimp Litopenaeus schmitti has been a commercial exploited species in Colombian Caribbean since 1968, becoming a high trade interest species and carrying a development of high fisheries activity, which then caused an overexploitation and a subsequent decrease in catches. Due to the current situation of this species, with the aim of assess the genetic diversity and the level of differentiation within each population and between different populations of the southern white shrimp with help of microsatellite molecular markers, 162 individuals were fished from four shore locations; Laguna de Navío Quebrado in La Guajira, Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta in Magdalena, Bahía de Barbacoas in Bolívar and Bahía de Cispatá in Sucre; and one open sea population in Golfo de Morrosquillo, Córdoba and Sucre shores. It was found that Navío Quebrado's population showed the highest level of observed heterocigosity and Ciénaga Grande's population showed the lower level of inbreeding. According to the analysis of population structure, there are three population units; one consisting of Ciénaga Grande, Bahía de Barbacoas, and Cispatá populations, another consisting of Golfo de Morrosquillo population, and a third one consisting of Laguna de Navío Quebrado; these findings could be results of the oceanographic current patterns.

              Marine speciation on a small planet.

              The scale of population structure in many marine species is on the order of thousands to tens of thousands of kilometers. How does speciation take place in oceans that are only about this same size? Recent results suggest an important role for transient isolation, gamete ecology and molecular evolution at gamete recognition loci. These factors have long been appreciated by plant biologists, and are likely to be a fruitful area of research for marine biologists as well. Copyright © 1992. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
