Almas al Cielo y Dinero a las Bolsas: Bautismos y Ejecuciones en la Naciente Modernidad Valenciana

Abstract

Entre las revueltas y revoluciones que se despliegan en Europa a comienzos de la modernidad, las Germanías (1519-1523) desarrolladas en el escenario valenciano han adoptado un carácter particular. El sesgo antimorisco de sus acciones, caracterizadas por bautismos forzados y ejecuciones, otorga al movimiento una cualidad original. Nuestro trabajo tiene por objeto precisar el lugar que los moros tuvieron en aquella revuelta, a partir de una lectura de las crónicas políticas del período. Un enfoque centrado en la conexión entre ideas y acciones revela el significado de aquellas prácticas. Las mismas hunden sus raíces tanto en el ideario bajomedieval adoptado por los agermanados como en las condiciones estructurales que precipitaron aquellos sucesos que transformaron para siempre el escenario valenciano.

Translated abstract

Among the revolts and revolutions that spread out in Europe at the beginning of the modern times, the Germanías (1519-1523) that developed in Valencia adopted a particular character. The antimoorish bias of their actions, characterized by forced baptisms and executions, gives the movement its original character. The object of the paper has been to specify the role the Moors played in this revolt, from the analysis of the political chronicles of the period. The meaning of these practices is revealed by an approach centred on the connection between ideas and actions. The former are rooted both in the ideology of the late Middle Ages adopted by the "agermanados", and in the structural conditions that caused the events that transformed the Valencian scene forever.
