Abstract

Desde Homero, ἀργός significa tanto 'blanco' como 'rápido'. Según la doctrina establecida, 'rápido' es el sentido original y se atestigua para los cognados de ἀργός en indo-iranio. El cambio de significado de 'rápido' a 'blanco' se atribuye a la sinestesia. Sin embargo, el sentido original es 'blanco', pues no hay testimonios definitivos para 'rápido' fuera del griego y la sinestesia entre movimiento y brillo / color es improbable. No se trata, pues, de un cambio semántico natural, sino de un caso de resemantización irracional.

Since Homer, ἀργός means both 'white' and 'quick'. According to prevalent doctrine, 'quick' is the original meaning. Allegedly, it is attested for the cognates of ἀργός in Indo-Iranian. The change of meaning from 'quick' to 'white' is attributed to synesthesia. However, the original meaning must have been 'white', since there is no compelling evidence for 'quick' outside Greek and synesthesia between motion and shine / colour is unlikely. So, we are not dealing with a natural semantic shift, but with a case of irrational resemantization.
