      Effect of Various Stages of Cryopreservation on the Viability of Corneal Endothelium

          Abstract

          The effect of various stages of the CAPELLA et al method for corneal cryopreservation on the enzymatic activity of corneal endothelium was tested in nine rabbit eyes. The controls, as well as the stage prior to freezing, did not have any demonstrable effect on alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase and succinic dehydrogenase enzymatic activity. The stage of thawing following freezing decreased histochemical activity for the three enzymes substantially in comparison to control specimens. In none of the cases was histochemical activity abolished completely for any of the studied enzymes.
