          Abstract

The long-overdue introduction of new technology into parasite diagnostics has produced important tests that are now finding a place in clinical laboratories. It is too early to consider abandoning microscopy; the novel technology will run alongside the more traditional techniques for some years to come. Well-trained microscopists, supported by regular continuing professional development and external quality assessment schemes, are still central to the provision of a reliable diagnostic parasitology service.
