          Abstract

          Abstract This paper emphazises main steps of the discovery of one of the most salient autonomic markers of mind expressions, the electrodermal activity (EDA). The contribution of French and German schools of physiology, aimed by clinical needs and the desire to know further about physiological mechanisms, constitutes the very early roots of such activity. In this frame, Féré and Tarchanoff, respectively a French and a Russian discoverers, established the link between mind activity and the EDA on the one hand and laid the methodological foundations of modern utilisation of this neuromarker on the other hand. This heritage, associated with central neural measures, is promised to an expanding future in neuropsychology, psychopathology, neurology, criminology and in cognitive and affective neuroscience.

          Resumen: Este artículo enfatiza las etapas principales del descubrimiento de uno de los marcadores autonómos más destacados de las expresiones mentales, la actividad electrodérmica (EDA). La contribución de las escuelas de fisiología francesa y alemana, orientada por las necesidades clínicas y el deseo de conocer más sobre los mecanismos fisiológicos, constituyen las primeras raíces de dicha actividad. En este marco, Féré y Tarchanoff, descubridores franceses y rusos respectivamente, establecieron el vínculo entre la actividad mental y la EDA, por un lado, y sentaron las bases metodológicas de la utilización moderna de este neuromarcador, por el otro. Este legado, asociado con medidas neuronales centrales, promete un futuro en expansión en neuropsicología, psicopatología, neurología, criminología y en neurociencia cognitiva y afectiva.

          Publication recommendations for electrodermal measurements.

          This committee was appointed by the SPR Board to provide recommendations for publishing data on electrodermal activity (EDA). They are intended to be a stand-alone source for newcomers and experienced users. A short outline of principles for electrodermal measurement is given, and recommendations from an earlier report (Fowles et al., ) are incorporated. Three fundamental techniques of EDA recording are described: (1) endosomatic recording without the application of an external current, (2) exosomatic recording with direct current (the most widely applied methodology), and (3) exosomatic recording with alternating current-to date infrequently used but a promising future methodology. In addition to EDA recording in laboratories, ambulatory recording has become an emerging technique. Specific problems that come with this recording of EDA in the field are discussed, as are those emerging from recording EDA within a magnetic field (e.g., fMRI). Recommendations for the details that should be mentioned in publications of EDA methods and results are provided. Copyright © 2012 Society for Psychophysiological Research.

              Looking at pictures: Affective, facial, visceral, and behavioral reactions

              Colored photographic pictures that varied widely across the affective dimensions of valence (pleasant-unpleasant) and arousal (excited-calm) were each viewed for a 6-s period while facial electromyographic (zygomatic and corrugator muscle activity) and visceral (heart rate and skin conductance) reactions were measured. Judgments relating to pleasure, arousal, interest, and emotional state were measured, as was choice viewing time. Significant covariation was obtained between (a) facial expression and affective valence judgments and (b) skin conductance magnitude and arousal ratings. Interest ratings and viewing time were also associated with arousal. Although differences due to the subject's gender and cognitive style were obtained, affective responses were largely independent of the personality factors investigated. Response specificity, particularly facial expressiveness, supported the view that specific affects have unique patterns of reactivity. The consistency of the dimensional relationships between evaluative judgments (i.e., pleasure and arousal) and physiological response, however, emphasizes that emotion is fundamentally organized by these motivational parameters.
