Abstract

Durante 1994 el chivo mapalé (Cathorops spixii) fue el segundo recurso pesquero más abundante en la Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta y el Complejo de Pajarales, principal sistema laguno-estuarino de Colombia. A partir de estadísticas de capturas comerciales y prospecciones pesqueras, se determinaron los parámetros básicos de su población: ciclo reproductivo, crecimiento, mortalidad, rendimiento y biomasa por recluta. Se presentaron individuos maduros durante todo el año con un pico de maduración y desove de junio a agosto cubriendo las épocas de lluvia menor y seca, respectivamente. La talla media de madurez se estimó en 23 cm. Los parámetros de crecimiento de la función de von Bertalanffy fueron: L∞ = 32.5 cm y K = 0.38 año-1, en tanto que el índice de desempeño del crecimiento φ' fue 2.6. Las tasas de mortalidad total (Z), natural (M) y por pesca (F) fueron estimadas en 2.83, 0.96 y 1.87 año-1, respectivamente. La tasa de explotación actual (E = 0.66) indica que el recurso se encuentra sobre-explotado; por consiguiente se recomienda regular la pesquería, reduciendo la tasa de mortalidad por pesca a F = 1.0 año-1 y aumentando la talla media de captura a 23 cm.

Translated abstract

During 1994, the catfish "chivo mapalé" (Cathorops spixii) was the second most abundant fishing resource in the "Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta" and the "Complejo de Pajarales", the main lacustrine-estuarine system of Colombia. Using commercial catch statistics and fishing explorations, the population parameters were determined reproductive cycle, growth, mortality, yield and biomass per recruit. Mature individuals were present all year around with peaks of ripeness and spawning from June to August during periods of little rain and dry, respectively. The mean maturity size was estimated at 23 cm. The growth parameters of the Von Bertalanffy function were: L∞ = 32.5 cm and K = 0.38 year-1, with a growth performance index φ' of 2.6. Total (Z), natural (M) and fishing (F) mortality rates were estimated as 2.83, 0.96 and 1.87 year-1, respectively. The exploitation rate E = 0.66 indicates that the resource is overfished. Therefore it is recomended a fishery regulation by decreasing the mortality rate to F = 1.0 year-1 and increasing the cath mean size to 23 cm.
