      The Influence of Business Support Services on Digital Entrepreneurs’ Performance: A case of University of Dar es Salaam ICT Innovation Hub, Tanzania

          Abstract

          This paper examined the influence of business support services provided by incubators on the performance of digital entrepreneurs in Tanzania, with a specific focus on the University of Dar es Salaam ICT Incubator (UDICTI). The Open Innovation theoretical framework guided this study. The descriptive survey design was deployed through mixed research approaches to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. A sample of 42 active incubatees was selected from a population of 53 incubatees at University of Da es Salaam Innovation Hub through simple random probability technique. The five Likert scale questionnaire was designed for the collection of quantitative data while the semi-structured interview was utilized for the collection of qualitative data for triangulation purpose. Furthermore, data were analyzed using multiple regression method and content analysis method. Findings indicate that business services including business development assistance, marketing assistance, mentoring and funding positively and significantly contribute to the performance of digital entrepreneurs. The findings of the study highlight the critical role of business support services in enhancing the performance of digital entrepreneurs, particularly within the context of the University of Dar es Salaam ICT Innovation Hub. These insights are significant for fostering innovation and economic growth, not only within Tanzania but also in similar developing regions. The research concluded that constructive role of business support services namely business development assistance, marketing assistance, mentoring and funding positively influence growth of digital incubates. The implications of this research can guide policymakers and stakeholders in creating supportive ecosystems that empower digital entrepreneurs. It is recommended that the hub should allocate sufficient and continuous funding to support digital incubators and strengthen its monitoring efforts for existing incubates.

          Survey response rates: Trends and a validity assessment framework

          Survey methodology has been and continues to be a pervasively used data-collection method in social science research. To better understand the state of the science, we first analyze response-rate information reported in 1014 surveys described in 703 articles from 17 journals from 2010 to 2020. Results showed a steady increase in average response rate from 48% in 2005 to 53% in 2010 to 56% in 2015 and 68% in 2020; a marked increase in the number of surveys per published article from 1.27 in 2015 to 1.79 in 2020; and that variables that predict response-rate fluctuations over time are related to research design (e.g. data-collection medium), participant motivation (e.g. incentives), and researcher motivation (i.e. number of surveys per article). Second, we propose complementary information on contemporary response-rate norms and benchmarks with a response-rate validity assessment framework to gather evidence on accuracy of inferences based on a particular response-rate level. Implementing this validation process involves gathering information on the researcher–participant relationship, participant qualifications and motivation, survey length and complexity, and cultural and national context. Future survey research should implement the validity assessment framework in addition to reporting the response-rate value to better indicate a sample’s quality, appropriateness, and representativeness.

            Factors Affecting Response Rates of the Web Survey with Teachers

            Although web survey has been a popular method of data collection in the academic community, it presents meagre response rates, which primarily affect the validity of the results as well as the reliability of the outcomes. Surveys worldwide that study the response rate only of teachers have not been found in the relevant literature. In this survey, with a sample of 263 Greek teachers, we investigate possible factors that explain teachers’ intention to participate in web surveys that are conducted by online questionnaires indicating, therefore, the factors that probably influence the response rate of web surveys. Our findings support those factors such as (a) authority, (b) incentives, (c) survey structure/form, (d) ethical issues, (e) reminders and pre-notifications, and (f) survey time received, which seem to explain the teachers’ intention to participate in web surveys with questionnaires. Based on the findings, methodology implications and limitations for researchers are discussed.

              Impact of Business Incubators on Sustainable Entrepreneurship Growth with Mediation Effect

              This study aims to measure and investigates the mediating effect of business incubators (BIs) and the influence of training programs, capital support, and networking services on sustainable entrepreneurship growth (SEG). A mediated conceptual model is constructed to simplify the effect and influences of variables taken in this study. A quantitative research method is employed on a sample size of 567. A survey questionnaire was used as an instrument to collect data from incubator centers and entrepreneurs. The method of bootstrapping, partial least squares (software 3.2.8) Algorithms, and structural equation models were used. In findings, the positive and significant influence of networking services, capital support, and training programs were identified on SEG. Also, the relationship between networking services, capital support, training programs, and SEG was mediated by BIs.
