      Collision tumor of squamous cell carcinoma of the scalp and meningioma: A case report

          Abstract

          Finding 2 different histological tumor types at the same site is extremely unusual, especially in patients with no history of radiation exposure or a family history of cancer. We describe a rare case of co-occurrence of meningioma and squamous cell carcinoma at the same site. A 67-year-old woman with a 6-month headache and a verrucous ulcerative mass on her frontoparietal region is the subject of this case study. Her medical history and her family’s medical history are both blank. Her bilateral frontoparietal regions were found to have large heterogeneous lesions with areas of necrosis and superficial ulceration on radiological examination. An extensive heterogeneous extra-axial lesion was discovered during further radiological analysis in the left parasagittal region. Histopathologic examination revealed an impinging tumor consisting of a meningioma and squamous cell carcinoma at the same site. It is extremely uncommon to have multiple primary scalp cancers of different cell types present at the same time. To identify these cancers and choose the best treatments, clinicians will benefit from the information in our case reports.

          Advances in the management of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck

          Squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN) is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. The main risk factors for cancers of the oral cavity, larynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx are alcohol and tobacco use. In addition, the human papillomavirus (HPV) is an established cause of oropharyngeal cancer. An experienced multidisciplinary team is necessary for adequate management and optimal outcome. The treatment of locally advanced disease generally requires various combinations of radiotherapy, surgery, and systemic therapy, but despite this aggressive multimodal treatment, 40% to 60% of the patients will relapse. In this report, we will discuss recent advances in the management of SCCHN, including new developments in molecular biology, imaging, and treatment.

            Glioblastoma simultaneously present with adjacent meningioma: case report and review of the literature.

            The simultaneous occurrence of multiple primary intracranial tumors has been reported previously. However, most of these tumors arise after cranial radiotherapy or in association with familial tumor syndromes. Double tumors of different histologies that are unrelated to radiotherapy or genetic disorders are very rare. We present a case of two primary intracranial tumors occurring simultaneously at adjacent sites. Preoperative gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of these tumors revealed a single continuous lesion. Postoperative histological examination revealed the presence of two distinct tumors, meningioma and glioblastoma multiforme. To elucidate the mechanism of synchronous tumor formation, we performed immunohistochemical analysis of the proteins involved in the receptor tyrosine kinase, Wnt, and Notch signaling pathways. These analyses showed that platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptors-alpha and beta were overexpressed in both tumors, thereby indicating the oncogenic effects of activated signaling of these receptors. The PDGF-mediated paracrine system may induce one tumor from another.

              Metastasis of lung adenosquamous carcinoma to meningioma: case report with literature review.

              The occurrence of metastasis of a systemic neoplasm to an intracranial tumor is a rare phenomenon. Meningiomas have been reported as the most common intracranial tumor to harbor a systemic metastasis, with breast and lung carcinomas being the most common sites of origination. Here, we report a case of an adenocarcinoma metastasis of an adenosquamous lung carcinoma found within a meningioma, resulting in the patient's first clinical manifestations. We also review the literature for other cases of adenocarcinoma metastatic to a meningioma and suggest mechanisms that make meningiomas likely to harbor systemic metastases including increased vascularity, slow growth rate, increased hyaline content and expression of cell-cell adhesion molecules.
