          Abstract

          <sup>14</sup>C-allantoin is freely filtered into glomerular fluid and both secreted into and reabsorbed from tubule fluid, as disclosed by clearance, micropuncture, microinjection, surface drop deposition, tissue analysis, and in vitro slice methods. Secretion, resulting in proximal fractional deliveries of 1.12 ± 0.05 (n = 53), was inhibited by PAH, probenecid and salicylate, but neither by creatinine nor by N<sub>1</sub>-methylnicotinamide. Reabsorption along the whole nephron resulted in a fractional excretion between 0.8 and 0.9 in the nondiuretic state which increased above unity at high rates of urine flow.
