Abstract

El artículo reporta las dificultades que enfrenta el proceso de inserción de la sustentabilidad en las universidades iberoamericanas. Se recupera la discusión conceptual sobre la sustentabilidad en la región, así como los desafíos derivados de las demandas de la sociedad, del Estado y las presiones del mercado global. El punto focal está puesto en la manera en que suelen ejecutarse los pronunciamientos de las instituciones de educación superior (IES). Las principales dificultades están caracterizadas por un conjunto de declaraciones y de planes que quedan en un plano meramente formal. Asimismo, aplicamos la metáfora del "techo de cristal" -adoptada en los estudios de género- para representar la barrera que impide hacer cambios sustantivos y estructurales.

Translated abstract

The article reports the challenges facing the sustainability addition process in Ibero-American universities. We recover the conceptual discussion about region sustainability and the arising challenges from the society and state demands, and global market pressures. The focus is placed on how often these higher education institutions pronouncements are being held. The main difficulties are characterized by a set of declarations and plans that remain in a purely formal level. We apply the glass ceiling metaphor -adopted for genre studies- to represent the barrier towards substantive and structural changes. We emphasize that universities do not seem to be able to address many challenges, especially inserting sustainability into its structure, operation and substantive functions.
