          Abstract

Replacement of Zr by Ce in a metal organic framework gives defects and redox activity for use in heterogeneous catalysis.

          Abstract

Crystallisation of a mixed-metal form of the porous framework UiO-66 in which Zr is partially replaced by Ce produces a ligand-defective material, that contains some Ce( iii) as well as a majority of Ce( iv). Infrared spectroscopy shows enhanced binding of methanol in the substituted material that leads to catalytic decomposition of the alcohol, which may be due to a combination of defects and redox activity.

A facile synthesis of UiO-66, UiO-67 and their derivatives.

A scalable, reproducible method of synthesizing UiO-66- and UiO-67-type MOFs, entailing the addition of HCl to the reaction mixture, has been investigated. The new protocol requires a fraction of the time of previously reported procedures, yields exceptional porosities, and works with a range of linkers.
