      Scelionidae (Hymenoptera) parasitizing eggs of Bagrada hilaris (Hemiptera, Pentatomidae) in Mexico

          Abstract

          The painted bug or bagrada bug, Bagrada hilaris (Burmeister) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is a key pest of crops in the family Brassicaceae. In this work, three species of Scelionidae (Hymenoptera) are reported for the first time as parasitoids of painted bug eggs in Mexico, at Saltillo, state of Coahuila: Gryon myrmecophilum (Ashmead), Telenomus podisi Ashmead and Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston). This is also the first report of a species of the widespread genus Telenomus as an egg parasitoid of B. hilaris outside of India. Total percent parasitism, high resolution images, and CO1 sequences are provided for each species. In the future, research in Mexico should be carried out on parasitoid species presented in this work to determine their potential as biological control agents and the feasibility of augmentative, classical or inoculative biocontrol strategies for integrated pest management.

          KEY TO GENERA OF SCELIONIDAE OF THE HOLARCTIC REGION, WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF NEW GENERA AND SPECIES (HYMENOPTERA: PROCTOTRUPOIDEA)

          A key to the genera of Scelionidae of the Holarctic region is given. Sixty-seven genera are recognized in three subfamilies, viz . Telenominae, Teleasinae, and Scelioninae. Seven new genera and six new species are described from America north of Mexico, viz . Aradoctonus armatus n. gen. and n. sp. (Telenominae, Telenomini), Embioctonus setiger n. gen. and n. sp. (Scelioninae, Embidobiini), Epigryon audax n. gen. and n. sp. (Scelioninae, Gryonini), Exon californicum n. gen. and n. sp. (Scelioninae, Gryonini), Harringtonia n. gen. for Baryconus cinctus Harrington (Scelioninae, Psilanteridini), Mecix texana n. gen. and n. sp. (Scelioninae, Psilanteridini), and Spiniteleia campbelli n. gen. and n. sp. (Scelioninae, Psilanteridini). The Nearctic and Palearctic faunas of Scelionidae are compared, analyzed, and tabulated on generic level. Twenty-eight plates with 207 scanning electron micrographs and line drawings are included.

            Key to Nearctic species of Trissolcus Ashmead (Hymenoptera, Scelionidae), natural enemies of native and invasive stink bugs (Hemiptera, Pentatomidae)

            Trissolcus japonicus (Ashmead) and T. cultratus (Mayr), comb. rev. are under study as classical biological agents to control the brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys (Stål) in North America. Here we present diagnoses for all Nearctic species of Trissolcus, including T. japonicus and T. cultratus comb. rev., and identification keys to enable separation of these species from the existing fauna. Trissolcus cultratus comb. rev. is removed from synonymy with T. flavipes. Two new species are described, Trissolcus valkyria sp. n. and T. zakotos sp. n. A neotype is designated for T. brochymenae and a lectotype is designated for T. basalis.

              Trissolcus hyalinipennis Rajmohana & Narendran (Hymenoptera, Scelionidae), a parasitoid of Bagrada hilaris (Burmeister) (Hemiptera, Pentatomidae), emerges in North America

              Trissolcushyalinipennis Rajmohana & Narendran is an Old World egg parasitoid of Bagradahilaris (Burmeister). Its potential as a classical biological control agent in the United States has been under evaluation in quarantine facilities since 2014. A survey of resident egg parasitoids using fresh sentinel B.hilaris eggs in Riverside, California, revealed that T.hyalinipennis is present in the wild. Four cards with parasitized eggs were recovered, from which one yielded a single live T.hyalinipennis and two unidentified dead wasps (Scelionidae), and three yielded twenty live Trissolcusbasalis (Wollaston) and one dead wasp. Subsequently, samples from Burbank, California, collected with a Malaise trap as part of the BioSCAN project, yielded five females of T.hyalinipennis . It is presumed that the introduction of T.hyalinipennis to this area was accidental. Surveys will be continued to evaluate the establishment of T.hyalinipennis as well as the presence of other resident parasitoid species.
