Abstract

Na twee eerdere publicaties over het ossuarium van Jakobus geeft de auteur hier een overzicht van de laatste ontwikkelingen. De rechtszaak tegen de eigenaar van het ossuarium en verschillende handelaren in antiquiteiten, die onlangs resulteerde in vrijspraak, maakt duidelijk dat wetenschappers en andere experts in dit geval soms reputatie boven waarheidsvinding hebben laten gaan. Gevreesd moet worden dat werkelijk onvooringenomen onderzoek van dit ossuarium en deze inscriptie vrijwel onmogelijk zijn geworden.

Translated abstract

After two previous publications on the James ossuary in this journal, the author here summarises the latest developments. The court case against the owner of the ossuary and several dealers in antiquities, which recently resulted in their acquittal, revealed the dubious way in which scholars and other experts have handled this ossuary. It is feared that the authenticity of the inscription will remain in doubt and the status of the ossuary tainted.
