          Abstract

          Eleven plants were collected in the Zongo Valley following an organoleptic and chimio-taxonomic criteria of collection to find species with colorant and photo-protector properties. Brachyotum microdon, Monnina bridgesii and Souroubea fragilis present promising colorant attributes. In addition,B. microdon, Rumex acetosella and Fuchsia boliviana show important absorptions in the UV-B region while S. fragilis, Orthaea boliviensis, Senecio floccosus and Baccharis pentlandiihave UV-A and UV-B absorptions. A series of phytochemical tests were performed to learn about the secondary metabolite profile in the collected species. This is the first work done and published for Souroubea fragilis, Orthaea boliviensis and Senecio floccosus.

          Once plantas fueron colectadas en el Valle de Zongo siguiendo un criterio de colecta organoléptico y químio-taxonómico para encontrar especies con propiedades colorantes y fotoprotectoras. Brachyotum microdon, Monnina bridgesii y Souroubea fragilis presentan prometedores atributos como colorantes. Además, B. microdon, Rumex acetosella y Fuchsia boliviana muestran importantes absorciones en la región de UV-B mientras que S. fragilis, Orthaea boliviensis, Senecio floccosus y Baccharis pentlandii poseen absorciones en UV-A y UV-B. Una serie de ensayos fitoquímicos fueron realizados para conocer el perfil de metabolitos secundarios en las especies colectadas. Este es el primer trabajo realizado y publicado de Souroubea fragilis, Orthaea boliviensis y Senecio floccosus.

          Potential of herbs in skin protection from ultraviolet radiation

          Herbs have been used in medicines and cosmetics from centuries. Their potential to treat different skin diseases, to adorn and improve the skin appearance is well-known. As ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause sunburns, wrinkles, lower immunity against infections, premature aging, and cancer, there is permanent need for protection from UV radiation and prevention from their side effects. Herbs and herbal preparations have a high potential due to their antioxidant activity, primarily. Antioxidants such as vitamins (vitamin C, vitamin E), flavonoids, and phenolic acids play the main role in fighting against free radical species that are the main cause of numerous negative skin changes. Although isolated plant compounds have a high potential in protection of the skin, whole herbs extracts showed better potential due to their complex composition. Many studies showed that green and black tea (polyphenols) ameliorate adverse skin reactions following UV exposure. The gel from aloe is believed to stimulate skin and assist in new cell growth. Spectrophotometer testing indicates that as a concentrated extract of Krameria triandra it absorbs 25 to 30% of the amount of UV radiation typically absorbed by octyl methoxycinnamate. Sesame oil resists 30% of UV rays, while coconut, peanut, olive, and cottonseed oils block out about 20%. A “sclerojuglonic” compound which is forming from naphthoquinone and keratin is the reaction product that provides UV protection. Traditional use of plant in medication or beautification is the basis for researches and making new trends in cosmetics. This review covers all essential aspects of potential of herbs as radioprotective agents and its future prospects.

            Antioxidants and antioxidant activity of several pigmented rice brans.

            This study investigated the antioxidant content and activity of phenolic acids, anthocyanins, α-tocopherol and γ-oryzanol in pigmented rice (black and red rice) brans. After methanolic extraction, the DPPH free radical scavenging activity and antioxidant activity were measured. The pigmented rice bran extract had a greater reducing power than a normal rice bran extract from a long grain white rice. All bran extracts were highly effective in inhibiting linoleic acid peroxidation (60-85%). High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of antioxidants in rice bran found that γ-oryzanol (39-63%) and phenolic acids (33-43%) were the major antioxidants in all bran samples, and black rice bran also contained anthocyanins 18-26%. HPLC analysis of anthocyanins showed that pigmented bran was rich in cyanidin-3-glucoside (58-95%). Ferulic acid was the dominant phenolic acid in the rice bran samples. Black rice bran contained gallic, hydroxybenzoic, and protocatechuic acids in higher contents than red rice bran and normal rice bran. Furthermore, the addition of 5% black rice bran to wheat flour used for making bread produced a marked increase in the free radical scavenging and antioxidant activity compared to a control bread.

              Determination of polyphenols, flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity in colored chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.).

              Dry legumes are staple and potentially functional food, being a good source of polyphenols, flavonoids, and antioxidant activity. The objective of this study was to determine the total polyphenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and their relation with antioxidant capacity in 17 chickpea lines having colored seed coats (black, red, brown, green, rubiginous, gray, yellow, cream, or beige). The seed coat usually contains more than 95% of these compounds. In this study, both TPC and TFC varied significantly among different lines and were highly correlated to antioxidant activity. Colored seeds contained up to 13-, 11-, and 31-fold more TPC, TFC, and antioxidant activity, respectively, than cream- and beige-color seeds. Thus, colored chickpea could be a potentially functional food in addition to its traditional role of providing dietary proteins and dietary fibers.
