          Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to analyze life aspirations of adolescent elite athletes and their relationship with the passion they have with respect to their sport. Participants were 234 Argentine athletes (47.90 % male; 52.10 % female) aged between 12 and 16 years (M = 14.48, SD = 1.09) from National Sport Development Plan (Buenos Aires, 2018) selected to train for the next Youth Olympic Games. All adolescents answered a sociodemographic questionnaire, Aspirations Index and Passion Scale. Results showed that boys had significantly higher scores than girls on wealth and fame aspirations, as well as on obsessive passion, while there were no significant differences depending on the type of sport (individual vs. team). For males, personal growth predicted harmonious passion, while for females, health and community contribution predicted harmonious passion. Fame was the only predictor for obsessive passion in male group. There were no significant predictors for girls' obsessive passion. Finally, analyzes did not show significant differences in the study variables depending on the type of sport (individual vs. team). These results support previous studies about the role of intrinsic and extrinsic aspirations in enabling of engagement and positive development in adolescent elite sports.

The independent effects of goal contents and motives on well-being: it's both what you pursue and why you pursue it.

The assertion that both the content of goals and the motives behind goals affect psychological well-being has been controversial. Three studies examined this issue directly, showing that both what goals people pursue (i.e., whether they strive for extrinsic vs. intrinsic goal contents) and why people pursue them (i.e., whether they strive for autonomous vs. controlled motives) make significant independent contributions to psychological well-being. The pattern emerged in between-person and within-person studies of cross-sectional well-being and also emerged in a year-long study of prospective change in well-being. Implications for prescriptive theories of happiness are discussed.

On the role of passion in performance.

The present paper reports two studies designed to test the Dualistic Model of Passion with regard to performance attainment in two fields of expertise. Results from both studies supported the Passion Model. Harmonious passion was shown to be a positive source of activity investment in that it directly predicted deliberate practice (Study 1) and positively predicted mastery goals which in turn positively predicted deliberate practice (Study 2). In turn, deliberate practice had a direct positive impact on performance attainment. Obsessive passion was shown to be a mixed source of activity investment. While it directly predicted deliberate practice (Study 1) and directly predicted mastery goals (which predicted deliberate practice), it also predicted performance-avoidance and performance-approach goals, with the former having a tendency to facilitate performance directly, and the latter to directly negatively impact on performance attainment (Study 2). Finally, harmonious passion was also positively related to subjective well-being (SWB) in both studies, while obsessive passion was either unrelated (Study 1) or negatively related to SWB (Study 2). The conceptual and applied implications of the differential influences of harmonious and obsessive passion in performance are discussed.
