      Evaluation of Two Formulated Chitin Synthesis Inhibitors, Hexaflumuron and Lufenuron Against the Raisin Moth, Ephestia figulilella

          Abstract

          The raisin moth, Ephestia figulilella Gregson (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), has a nearly cosmopolitan distribution, and causes severe quantitative and qualitative losses throughout the world. The larvae attack various drying and dried fruits, fallen figs, and damaged or moldy clusters of grapes on vines. Control of this pest in storage depends mostly on synthetic pesticides with several adverse side effects. To mitigate the adverse effects of these pesticides, investigations have focused on the development of compounds with more selectivity, and short residual life. In this research, insecticidal effects of two chitin synthesis inhibitors, hexaflumuron and lufenuron, were investigated against E. figulilella. Graded concentrations of each pesticide were prepared with distilled water. One-day-old fifth instar were sprayed by Potter's precision spray tower. Application of hexaflumuron and lufenuron on last instar larvae of E. figulilella caused not only mortality in larval stage, but also caused defects in pupal and adult stages. Larval mortality increased as concentration increased. The longevity of the fifth instars in both hexaflumuron and lufenuron treatments, in comparison with the controls, increased by more than 12 days. The longevity of adults decreased by about 10 days. Probit analysis data revealed that the sensitivity of the test insect to hexaflumuron (EC 50 = 95.38 ppm) was greater than lufenuron (EC 50= 379.21 ppm).

          Inhibition of growth and development of tobacco hornworm (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) larvae by cyromazine.

          When fed to larvae of tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta (L.), cyromazine strongly inhibited normal growth and development. Depending on the dose or period of feeding, symptoms were cuticular melanization, swellings in intersegmental regions, cuticular lesions, rupture of the body wall, and death. At greater than 10 ppm, cyromazine in the diet initiated symptoms in fifth instars, whereas greater than 20 ppm induced symptoms which led to death during the instar or at molting. The ratio of chitin to larval body weight in both cyromazine-exposed and control fifth instars increased slightly from ecdysis to 42 h. However, this ratio did not differ between the two groups, indicating that cyromazine had no immediate or direct effect on chitin production. When cyromazine was ingested by fifth instars, it was excreted rapidly, and a small amount (less than 5%) was metabolized to melamine. The amount of cyromazine found in the hemolymph remained relatively constant during the feeding period, whereas the amount present in the body wall increased with time and was localized in the KOH-soluble fraction. Cyromazine may inhibit growth or expansion of the body wall (or both) sufficiently to prevent normal internal growth, producing the observed symptoms and leading to abnormal development.

            Deterrent and insecticidal effects of extracts of pithraj,Aphanamixis polystachya (Meliaceae), againstTribolium castaneum in storage

            Laboratory experiments were carried out to investigate the efficacy of seed extracts of pithraj,Aphanamixis polystachya (Wall & Parker), a locally grown plant in Bangladesh, against the red flour beetle,Tribolium castaneum (Herbst.). Results of three different bioassays showed that crude extracts of pithraj seeds have strong repellent effects and moderate feeding deterrent and insecticidal (direct-contact) effects on adultTribolium castaneum.
