          ABSTRACT

          Objective

To evaluate the quality of life of physicians and investigate to what extent it is affected by work addiction.

          Methods

This is an exploratory, descriptive and cross-sectional study, conducted with 1,110 physicians. For data collection, we used a questionnaire with sociodemographic information, the World Health Organization Quality of Life BREF, and the Work Addiction Scale.

          Results

Most physicians presented high quality of life. Female participants presented lower quality of life in the domains psychologic, environment and general (p<0.05). Quality of life was negatively correlated with the number of shifts (p<0.005). The higher the addiction to work, the lower the quality of life.

          Conclusion

The research allowed understanding the implications of work addiction in the quality of life. Further studies are required to support the development of strategies that improve health conditions and quality of life of medical professionals.

[Application of the Portuguese version of the abbreviated instrument of quality life WHOQOL-bref].

The need of short instruments to evaluate Quality of life determines World Health Organization Quality of Life Group (WHOQOL Group) to develop an abbreviated version of the WHOQOL-100, the WHOQOL-bref. The objective is to present the Brazilian field trial of the WHOQOL-bref. WHOQOL-bref is composed by 26 questions divided in four domains: physical, psychological, social relationships and environment. The evaliation instrument, BDI (beck depression inventory) and BHS (beck hopelessness scale) were used in a 300 subjects sample in Porto Alegre, South Brazil. The instrument showed a good performance concerning internal consistency, discriminant validity, criterion validity, concurrent validity and test-retest reliability. The intrument allies good psychometric performance and practicity for use which puts it as an interesting option to evaluate quality of life in Brazil.

Workaholism vs. work engagement: the two different predictors of future well-being and performance.

This study investigated the distinctiveness of two types of heavy work investment (i.e., workaholism and work engagement) by examining their 2-year longitudinal relationships with employee well-being and job performance. Based on a previous cross-sectional study by Shimazu and Schaufeli (Ind Health 47:495-502, 2009) and a shorter term longitudinal study by Shimazu et al. (Ind Health 50:316-21, 2012; measurement interval = 7 months), we predicted that workaholism predicts long-term future unwell-being (i.e., high ill-health and low life satisfaction) and poor job performance, whereas work engagement predicts future well-being (i.e., low ill-health and high life satisfaction) and superior job performance.

Application of WHOQOL-BREF in Measuring Quality of Life in Health-Care Staff

Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of life of Neyshabur health-care staff and some factors associated with it with use of WHOQOL-BREF scale. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 522 staff of Neyshabur health-care centers from May to July 2011. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was applied to examine the internal consistency of WHOQOL-BREF scale; Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to determine the level of agreement between different domains of WHOQOL-BREF. Paired t-test was used to compare difference between score means of different domains. T-independent test was performed for group analysis and Multiple Linear Regression was used to control confounding effects. Results: In this study, a good internal consistency (α = 0.925) for WHOQOL-BREF and its four domains was observed. The highest and the lowest mean scores of WHOQOL-BREF domains was found for physical health domain (Mean = 15.26) and environmental health domain (Mean = 13.09) respectively. Backward multiple linear regression revealed that existence chronic disease in staff was significantly associated with four domains of WHOQOL-BREF, education years was associated with two domains (Psychological and Environmental) and sex was associated with psychological domain (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The findings from this study confirm that the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire is a reliable instrument to measure quality of life in health-care staff. From the data, it appears that Neyshabur health-care staff has WHOQOL-BREF scores that might be considered to indicate a relatively moderate quality of life.
