          Abstract

Superimposing cartoons causes an alteration of the brightness of a pattern stimulus. Therefore, the influence of luminance changes on pattern-evoked cortical potentials was investigated and compared to the results obtained with cartoon mixing. In both instances, the responses became higher when the mean luminance of the stimulus increased. Nevertheless, without the cartoons larger responses were obtained as compared to those obtained with the cartoons, though in the latter the mean luminance was always higher.
