Abstract

The Flint River is a variable water source and thus a challenge to treat; oversights and missteps combined with inherent chemical conditions set the stage for the historic water crisis in Flint, Mich.

Susan J. Masten (to whom correspondence may be addressed) is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan State University, 428 Shaw Ln., East Lansing, MI 48824 USA; masten@egr.msu.edu. She has 35 years’ experience in water treatment and 27 years at Michigan State University. She holds a patent on a hybrid ceramic membrane filtration system and has conducted extensive research on the use of this technology for the control of disinfection by‐products, nanoparticles, bromate, and pharmaceuticals in drinking water. Masten earned a BS degree in biochemistry from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck, N.J.; an MSE degree in environmental engineering from West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.V.; and a PhD degree in environmental engineering from Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.
