          Abstract

The micromachining is a cutting method for ultra-precision manufacturing of machine components in optical quality using mono-crystalline diamond tools. The micromachining of steels is uneconomical till now, because it entails an extremely high chemical wear of diamond tool. A way to solve the problem is the modification of the surface layer of the steels by nitriding or nitrocarburising. It leads to formation of a compound layer on the steel surface and this layer can be machined with reduced diamond wear. The compound layer, however, should be developed further with regard to the machinability. A thick compound layer with low porosity is particularly desirable.

In the present work several processes of gaseous nitrocarburising were carried out on the steel of 42CrMo4 (1.7225). The generated surface layers were characterised by metallography. It should be explained with the help of the experimental investigations, how the process parameters influence the formation of the pores in the compound layer.
