          Abstract

ABSTRACT Objective : This study aimed to evaluate the D0 diameter of standardized gutta-percha cones for four mechanized systems: ProTaper Universal®, Mtwo®, Wave One® and Reciproc®. Methods: An endodontic calibrator ruler was used to measure the D0 diameter of 60 main cones of the above systems. Measurements were made according 3 scores as follows: gutta-percha cone fits exactly into the same hole as the endodontic ruler gauge (score 1), cone falls short of the ruler gauge whole size (score 2); or exceeding the ruler gauge hole size (score 3). The diameters D0 obtained were compared with the values reported by manufacturers. All data were analyzed by means of T Test, at 1% level of significance. Results: The average value measured was significantly higher than the measures established by manufacturers (p <0.001). Conclusion : The gutta-percha cones of ProTaper Universal® systems Mtwo®, Wave One® and Reciproc® were not standardized, except for R40 cone of the Reciproc® system (Reciproc®). The trend was for variation in the D0 Diameter towards increasing measurement values.

The efficacy of gutta-percha removal using ProFiles.

The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy in vitro of gutta-percha removal from obturated root canals using ProFiles. Forty-eight human root canals with curvatures ranging between 25 and 45 degrees were instrumented by a standardized method to an apical ISO size 30 and 0.04 taper. They were obturated with vertically condensed gutta-percha. Retreatment was performed with the following techniques: K-Flexofiles with chloroform; Hedstrom files with chloroform; ProFiles 0.04 taper with chloroform; ProFiles 0.04 taper alone. The time for each method was measured. A microfocal macroradiographic technique was used to evaluate the amount of debris remaining within the root canals after the retreatment procedure. Roots were divided into apical, middle and coronal parts and scored on a scale of 0 (no debris) to 3 (> 50% of walls covered with debris) by trained observers on two separate occasions. The scores for debris remaining within root canals for K-Flexofiles with chloroform and ProFiles with chloroform were the lowest and not significantly different at all three levels of the roots examined (P > 0.05), and Hedstrom files with chloroform and ProFiles with chloroform were not significantly different in the apical part. In general, coronal parts were cleaner than apical parts. The difference in scores at the three levels between ProFiles with chloroform and ProFiles alone were each significant (P < 0.01). Instrumentation using ProFiles with chloroform (mean 6.42 min) was significantly faster than using hand files (mean 11.67 min) (P < 0.01). The results indicated that ProFiles or hand files with chloroform produced similarly clean canals, but that ProFiles were faster.

Micro-CT assessment of the sealing ability of three root canal filling techniques.

This study used micro-CT to compare three obturation techniques with respect to void occurrence in canals filled with bioceramic sealer. Thirty extracted first mandibular premolars were prepared with a ProTaper Universal system and randomly allocated to three groups. Canals were obturated with gutta-percha and bioceramic root canal sealer, using either single-cone, lateral compaction, or Thermafil filling technique. Each tooth was then scanned with micro-CT. Voids in 2D cross-sectional images and void volumes in 3D images of all root thirds were assessed in relation to obturation technique. There was no significant difference between obturation techniques in the proportion of sections with voids (P > 0.05). However, the results of the obturation techniques significantly differed in relation to root region (P < 0.05). In conclusion, no root filling technique resulted in void-free specimens. Void volumes were highest for the single-cone technique and lowest for Thermafil, in all regions (P < 0.05).

Quality of molar root canal fillings performed with the lateral compaction and the single-cone technique.

The aim was to compare the quality of root canal fillings performed with the single-cone and lateral compaction technique. Thirty-six canals in extracted molars were filled with ISO-standardized gutta-percha points, .02 taper, by using the lateral compaction technique; 38 were filled with one gutta-percha point, .04 taper, by using the single-cone technique. Each root canal was radiographed in the bucco-oral (BO) and the mesiodistal projection (MD). A root was sufficiently filled when three of four observers had assessed it so. There was no significant impact of the filling technique on the quality (logistic regression analysis, p > 0.4). There was a significant impact of the canal type, the mandibular distal canal having a higher chance for a sufficient root filling than the mandibular mesial canal in projection BO (p = .003), but both the mandibular distal (p = 0.001) and the maxillary palatal canals (p = 0.014) had a lower chance for a sufficient filling in projection MD.
