      Microstructure and thermal properties of Bi-Sn eutectic alloy

          Abstract

          Alloys based on Sn and Bi are considered to be one of the best soft lead-free solders due to their low melting temperature and low price. In addition, Bi-Sn alloy with a eutectic composition represents a promising candidate as a metallic phase change material (PCM) for use in the field of thermal energy storage (TES). The accurate knowledge of microstructural and thermophysical properties such as the latent heat of melting, thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity is of crucial importance for PCM selection. Thus, the aim of the current study has been to determine the microstructure, latent heat of melting and thermal conductivity of a eutectic alloy from the binary Bi-Sn system.

                MSc Ivana Manasijević, born 1980, is a PhD student in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, Technical Faculty in Bor, at the University of Belgrade, Serbia. Her main fields of scientific research are the characterization of metallic materials, phase change materials, low-melting alloys.

                Assistant Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ljubiša Balanović, born 1975, works in the Department for Metallurgical Engineering, Technical Faculty in Bor, at the University of Belgrade, Serbia. He finished his PhD in 2013. He is the author and co-author of more than 30 scientific papers in national and international journals. His main fields of interest are the experimental determination of phase diagrams and microstructural analysis of alloys.

                MSc Uroš Stamenković, born 1989, works in the Department for Metallurgical Engineering, Technical Faculty in Bor, at the University of Belgrade, Serbia. Currently, he is engaged in Doctoral academic studies in the same department. His scientific research includes the thermomechanical treatment of aluminum alloys of the 6000 series, new materials, optical and SEM investigation of materials, characterization of materials through mechanical testing (hardness, toughness and tensile strength), testing physical properties (electrical conductivity, diffusivity, thermal conductivity, heat capacity).

                Assistant Prof. Dr. Milan Gorgievski, born 1982, is Assistant Professor in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at Technical Faculty in Bor, at the University of Belgrade, Serbia. He completed his PhD in 2015.

                Vladan Ćosović, PhD, born 1974, is a Full Research Professor (Principal Research Fellow) at the University of Belgrade, Institute of Chemistry, Technology and Metallurgy, Department of Materials and Metallurgy. He received his PhD degree in 2008 at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy. His main fields of interest include synthesis and characterization of nanocrystalline and nanocomposite functional materials including permanent magnets, electrical contact materials and multicomponent metal systems. He is a member of the Association of Metallurgical Engineers of Serbia, Serbian Chemical Society and the Phase Diagram and Thermodynamics Committee of Serbia.
