          Abstract

The development of the ovary of a queen termite of Macrotermitinae is described for the first time: During the 1st larval instar approx 70 ovarioles differentiate. Up to the 4th nymphal instar their number increases up to approx 3200 by fission. During the first 3 nymphal instars the temporal pattern of the mitotic activity in ovarioles (oogonia and presumptive follicle cells) correlates with that of the oviduct. There are conformances with the epidermal mitotic activity. Up to the 5th nymphal instar differentiation of the oviduct has not yet been completed.

          Translated abstract
