          Abstract

          En este artículo se presenta el estudio del comportamiento a fatiga del acero SAE 4140 en condiciones diferentes: superficie pulida (acabado espejo), ambiente corrosivo (jugo de caña de azúcar), alta rugosidad superficial (superficie equivalente a la encontrada típicamente en los ejes de molino de caña) y una condición que involucra la combinación de las dos últimas. Las anteriores condiciones están presentes en los ejes de maza de molino de caña de azúcar durante el proceso de molienda. Se realizaron pruebas de fatiga en flexión rotatoria y se obtuvieron los valores de resistencia a la fatiga para las diferentes situaciones de ensayo. La disminución de la resistencia a la fatiga a causa de la condición superficial fue del 1,53%, debido al ambiente corrosivo fue del 14,9% y debido a la alta rugosidad y ambiente corrosivo fue del 16,1%. Los resultados obtenidos se compararon con los encontrados para el acero SAE 1045, encontrándose que el jugo de caña y la alta rugosidad afectan en mayor grado al acero SAE 4140 en aproximadamente dos veces más que al acero SAE 1045.

          Translated abstract

          The fatigue behavior of SAE 4140 steel in different treatments is reported in this paper. Four treatments were tested: polished surface, corrosive atmosphere (sugar cane juice), low quality roughness (typical equivalent surface of the shaft cane mill) and the combined condition of the two last treatments. Fatigue tests were performed in rotating bending conditions and the values of fatigue strength for the different treatments were obtained. The decrease in fatigue strength due to the rough surface treatment was 1.53%, due to the corrosive environment was 14.9% and due to the high roughness and corrosive environment was 16.1%. The results were compared with those for SAE 1045 steel. SAE 4140 steel is more affected than SAE 1045 steel in the combined presence of high surface roughness and cane juice environment.
