      Effect of bovine somatotropin (500mg) administered at ten-day intervals on ovulatory responses, expression of estrus, and fertility in dairy cows

          Principal descriptors of body condition score in Holstein cows.

          The objective of this study was to assess objectively the ability of observers to assess body condition of dairy cows. Four observers independently assigned a body condition score (five-point scale, .25 increments) and described the appearance of seven body regions of 225 Holstein cows. Areas described were the thurl region, ischial and ileal tuberosities, ilio-sacral and ischio-coccygeal ligaments, transverse processes of the lumbar vertebrae, and spinous processes of the lumbar vertebrae. An absolute body condition score was designated for each cow based on the modal body condition score for all observers. If there was no modal body condition score, the mean score was used for the absolute body condition score. Statistical analysis of principal components was used to examine the relationship between body region description and absolute body condition score. Descriptions of body regions were highly correlated across all absolute body condition scores. Four principal component vectors explained 83.6% of the variation of the body region correlation matrix. The first principal latent vector accounted for 55% of the variation and was uniformly correlated with all body regions. Analysis of variance of first principal latent vector as the dependent variable and absolute body condition score as the class variable indicated that body condition could be separated into .25 units between 2.5 and 4.0, inclusively. Below 2.5 and > 4.0, body condition could only be separated by .5 units. Distinct changes in specific body regions were associated with change in absolute body condition score. Observers agreed with the absolute score 58.1% of the time, deviating by .25 units 32.6% of the time. A body condition score can be given to a cow based on principal descriptors of specific body regions between 2.5 and 4.0 by .25 units.

            Effects of presynchronization and bovine somatotropin on pregnancy rates to a timed artificial insemination protocol in lactating dairy cows.

            The objective was to examine the effects of presynchronization and bovine somatotropin (bST) on pregnancy rates to a timed artificial insemination protocol in lactating dairy cows. Lactating Holstein cows (n = 543) were assigned randomly in a 2 x 3 factorial experiment in which cows received a presynchronization treatment or not, and were treated with bST (500 mg) at 63 +/- 3, 73 +/- 3, or 147 +/- 3 d postpartum. The latter group was used as a control. Presynchronization treatment consisted of two injections of PGF2alpha (25 mg) given 14 d apart, with the second injection of PGF2alpha being administered 12 d before initiation of the timed artificial insemination protocol. All cows received GnRH (100 microg) at 63 +/- 3 d postpartum, an injection of PGF2alpha (40 mg) 7 d later, a GnRH injection at 48 h after PGF2alpha and were inseminated 16 to 20 h later. Cows were resynchronized if determined to be nonpregnant at ultrasonography at 32 d after insemination with a GnRH injection (100 microg), an injection of PGF2alpha (40 mg) 7 d later, and a GnRH injection at 48 h after PGF2alpha and were inseminated 16 to 20 h later. Cows were examined for pregnancy at 32 d and reexamined at 74 d after insemination. No differences in pregnancy rates were observed between cows receiving bST treatment at 63 +/- 3 d postpartum or at 73 +/- 3 d postpartum. An interaction between presynchronization and bST treatment indicated that pregnancy rates were increased for cows treated with bST when cows were presynchronized. When anestrous cows were excluded from the analyses, both an effect of bST and of presynchronization were observed, indicating that bST increased pregnancy rates regardless of presynchronization treatment and that presynchronization also increased pregnancy rates independently of bST treatment. Presynchronization and bST treatment may be used to increase first-service pregnancy rates to a timed artificial insemination protocol.

              Changes in reproductive physiology of lactating dairy cows due to elevated steroid metabolism.

              This manuscript focuses on potential changes in reproductive physiology that occur due to high milk production in lactating dairy cows. Four reproductive measures are discussed: interval to first ovulation, conception rate, duration of estrus, and multiple ovulation rate. The last two responses have now been closely linked to level of milk production. In contrast, time to first ovulation does not appear to be associated with level of milk production, and the association of conception rate with level of milk production is still controversial. In an attempt to explain some of the changes in reproductive physiology caused by high milk production a model of elevated steroid metabolism in lactating dairy cows is presented. Although many aspects of this model remain to be tested, a central role for elevated steroid metabolism in lactation-induced reproductive changes seems likely.
