      Histochemical Changes in the Cornea Following Photocoagulation of the Anterior Segment

          Alkaline and acid phosphatase enzymes were examined in twelve rabbit corneas following photocoagulation by Zeiss Argon photocoagulator. Five days following photocoagulation no enzymatic activity was detected in the burnt area. After 8 days both alkaline and acid phosphatases were demonstrated in the basal layers of the corneal epithelium. After 2 weeks intense acid phosphatase activity and less marked alkaline phosphatase activity were detected in the ulcerated corneal epithelium. After 3 weeks there was complete recovery of the corneal epithelium in the previously burnt area with return of both alkaline and acid phosphatase activity in all epithelial layers. The reaction was more marked in the basal layers. It is suggested that corneal burns caused by the photocoagulation beam should ordinarily recover after 3 weeks.
