DINAMISMO ILEGAL Y DESAFÍO OFICIAL: EL CONTRABANDO EN TUMACO Y EL PACÍFICO SUR EN LAS DÉCADAS DE 1860 Y 1870

Abstract

Este artículo identifica los problemas de contrabando en Tumaco y su región en las décadas de 1860 y 1870, es decir, al inicio de la bonanza exportadora de este puerto. A partir de la pregunta por el contrabando es posible conocer comerciantes, rutas comerciales y productos importados, lo que permite analizar la dinámica comercial de Tumaco cuando el puerto aún no había conquistado el lugar que adquirió posteriormente en la economía nacional. Postulamos que Tumaco ya conocía un dinamismo particular basado en la ilegalidad, que era crucial para la región, aun cuando éste atentó contra la autoridad pública y sus finanzas.

Translated abstract

This article discusses the problems of contraband in Tumaco and the surrounding region in the 1860s and 1870s, at the beginning of the export bonanza through this port. Using contraband as way to identify merchants, commercial routes, and imported products, it is possible to analyze the commercial dynamic of Tumaco before the port had acquired its later importance in the national economy. We suggest that Tumaco already experienced a particular dynamism based on illicit trade that was crucial for the region even though it threatened state authority and its finances.
