Plasmanitriding is a thermochemical surface heat treatment of steel components to produce compound layers which increase wear-, corrosion- and fatigue resistance. State of the art in process control is a fixed ratio of process gases and treatment parameters. Research in plasmanitriding lately showed that there is a significant and characteristic amount of ammonia formed by the reaction of the process gases nitrogen and hydrogen. This research paper is aiming to analyze the influence of plasma treatment parameters on the atmosphere and the formation of ammonia during plasmanitriding to establish better process control. The ammonia content is measured in the exhaust gas. Through measuring the fractions of the atmosphere and the content of ammonia in the exhaust gas, calculation of plasma nitriding potential similar to gas nitriding potential is possible. Its practicability as process control parameter is shown by adjusting the nitriding results such as formation and composition of compound layer through controlled plasma nitriding potential.
