          Abstract

          The cholinergic innervation of the choroid as disclosed by the acetylcholi-nesterase technique has been studied in several albitonic and pigmented mammals. Acetyl-cholinesterase-containing nerve fibers are commonly observed in albinotic species either surrounding choroidal blood vessels or freely running in the choroidal stroma; occasionally a few are seen in the choriocapillaris. A far lesser density of acetylcholinesterase-positive nerve fibers is observed in pigmented species, a density that is inversely related to the density of pigmentation. The combination of physical masking and physicochemical cation binding by melanin adequately explain the difference between the results in albino and in pigmented animals.
