          Abstract

          The present contribution gives an overview of some of the technological aspects of low temperature thermochemical treatment of stainless steel. Examples of low temperature gaseous nitriding, carburising and nitrocarburising of stainless steel are presented and discussed. In particular, the morphology, microstructure and characteristics of so-called expanded austenite “layers” on stainless steel are addressed.

          Kurzfassung

          Der vorliegende Beitrag gibt einen Überblick über einige technologische Aspekte der thermochemischen Niedertemperaturbehandlung von rostfreiem Stahl. Beispiele des Nitrierens, Aufkohlens und Nitrocarburierens von rostfreiem Stahl mit Gas bei Niedertemperatur werden vorgestellt und diskutiert. Es wird speziell auf Morphologie, Mikrostruktur und Charakteristik der sogenannten „expanded Austenit-Schichten“ bei rostfreiem Stahl eingegangen.
