          Abstract

Leser-Trélat sign is characterized by the abrupt appearance of multiple seborrheic keratoses in association with underlying malignant disease. A case of Leser-Trélat sign in a 66-year-old healthy woman is presented. Evaluation and follow-up for the development of malignancy over a 2-year period failed to reveal any evidence of malignancy. To date, almost all cases of Leser-Trélat sign have been reported in association with an underlying malignancy. It is less known that Leser-Trélat sign can also occur in healthy individuals in the absence of internal malignancy.

          Seborrheic keratosis.

Seborrheic keratosis is one of the most common skin tumors. Because this tumor is benign, treatment is not mandatory. However, the lesions are often removed especially for cosmetic reasons. Despite its frequency, many aspects of seborrheic keratosis remain elusive. In the last years new molecular genetic insights into seborrheic keratoses have been gained. The current knowledge about seborrheic keratosis with respect to epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and therapy is summarized.

              Sign of Leser-Trélat.

The sign of Leser-Trélat is rare. It is defined as the sudden eruption of multiple seborrheic keratoses caused by a malignancy. Because both seborrheic keratoses and cancer are common in the elderly, it is not always easy to tell from the literature or in any given patient if this sign is present. In fact, its validity has been questioned. Its association with malignant acanthosis nigricans is one of several of its features that support its legitimacy as a true paraneoplastic disorder.
