      Needs assessment and research priorities in the oral and dental health with health promotion approach in Iran

          Abstract

          BACKGROUND:

          Today, the scope of dental activities is a broad range from the needs assessment for epidemiological studies to the implementation of comprehensive programs for the prevention of oral diseases at various levels of the society. This study aimed to identify and prioritize the need researches in the field of oral and dental health in a dental hospital in Tehran, Iran.

          METHODS:

          This applied research was a mixed methods study carried out in Tehran, Iran, in 2018. The data gathering tool included a data collection form used for reviewing the documents, a semi-structured interview, and an open questionnaire. MAXQDA 10.0, Expert Choice 11.0, and Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) software were used for analyzing the collected data.

          RESULTS:

          After analyzing the results of the qualitative phase, 171 research topics in 6 areas were obtained, including 44 topics in “dental clinical care and treatment,” 37 topics in “health and prevention,” 19 topics in “education and health promotion,” 37 topics in “management of dental care delivery,” 16 topics in “policy and its requirements,” and 18 topics in “dentistry materials, equipment and technologies.”

          CONCLUSION:

          According to the results, it can be recommended that the research resources should be allocated based on the priorities identified by the present study so that the studied hospital has the highest dynamic performance in achieving its goals and objectives.

          Methodological and conceptual issues confronting a cross-country Delphi study of educational program evaluation.

          Although the Delphi is widely used, research on certain methodological issues is somewhat limited. After a brief introduction to the strengths, limitations, and methodological challenges of the technique, we share our experiences (as well as problems encountered) with an electronic Delphi of educational program evaluation (EPE) in the Asia-Pacific region. The study is described followed by a discussion of the difficulties in participant recruitment and selection, sample size, instrumentation, data collection and analysis and attempts to resolve them. Some of these problems are generic to the Delphi whereas others related to the specifics of the investigation. What we learned should be useful for future Delphis with a similar focus.

            Setting research priorities by applying the combined approach matrix.

            Priority setting in health research is a dynamic process. Different organizations and institutes have been working in the field of research priority setting for many years. In 1999 the Global Forum for Health Research presented a research priority setting tool called the Combined Approach Matrix or CAM. Since its development, the CAM has been successfully applied to set research priorities for diseases, conditions and programmes at global, regional and national levels. This paper briefly explains the CAM methodology and how it could be applied in different settings, giving examples and describing challenges encountered in the process of setting research priorities and providing recommendations for further work in this field. The construct and design of the CAM is explained along with different steps needed, including planning and organization of a priority-setting exercise and how it could be applied in different settings. The application of the CAM are described by using three examples. The first concerns setting research priorities for a global programme, the second describes application at the country level and the third setting research priorities for diseases. Effective application of the CAM in different and diverse environments proves its utility as a tool for setting research priorities. Potential challenges encountered in the process of research priority setting are discussed and some recommendations for further work in this field are provided.

              The future of medical education: a Canadian environmental scan.

              One hundred years after the Flexner report remade medical education in North America, many countries are reviewing the purpose and organisation of medical education. In Canada, a national study is being undertaken to define important issues and challenges for the future of medical education. The objectives of this paper are to describe the process of conducting an empirical environmental scan at a national level, and to present the research findings of this scan. Thirty national key informant interviews were conducted, transcribed and coded to identify key themes. Interview data were triangulated with data sourced from 34 commissioned literature reviews and a series of national focus groups. Ten key issues or priorities were identified and used to generate detailed review papers used by the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada to create a blueprint for the evolution of medical education. The new priorities have major implications for areas ranging from admissions, curriculum content, educational process and the need to articulate the purpose and responsibilities of medical schools in society. This research provides a case study of how an empirical research approach can be used to identify and validate priorities for changes in medical education at a national level. This approach may be of interest in other countries. © Blackwell Publishing Ltd 2010.
